osman bakar2Osman Bakar is currently Distinguished Professor at the Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Centre for Islamic Studies (SOASCIS), University of Brunei Darussalam. An Emeritus Professor of Philosophy of Science at the University of Malaya, Dr Bakar was formerly the Deputy CEO of the Kuala Lumpur-based think-tank, the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS), Malaysia (2008-2012), the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Research) at the University of Malaya (1995-2000) and Professor at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC), International Islamic University, Malaysia (2005-2008). Dr Bakar was also a Senior Fellow at the Prince al-Waleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, Georgetown University, Washington DC and Visiting Research Fellow at Doshisha University, Kyoto, Japan. Formerly the holder of Malaysia Chair of Islam in Southeast Asia at Georgetown University (2000-2005), Dr Bakar was educated in London University where he obtained B.Sc and M.Sc in Mathematics. He earned his doctorate in Islamic philosophy from Temple University, Philadelphia.

A Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Harvard University (1992), he has published 20 books and more than 300 articles on Islamic thought and civilization, particularly Islamic philosophy and science, and on contemporary Islam, inter-religious and inter-civilizational dialogues. The founder of the Center for Civilizational Dialogue at the University of Malaya (1995), Dr Bakar has also served as advisors and consultants to various international academic and professional organizations and institutions, including UNESCO and The Qatar Foundation. He was a member of C-100 (Council of 100 Leaders) of The West-Islamic World Initiative for Dialogue established by the World Economic Forum based in Switzerland. He was awarded with a datoship by the Sultan of Pahang (1994) and another datukship by the Malaysian King (2000).

Dr Bakar’s best known works are Tawhid and Science (A History and Philosophy of Islamic Science), Classification of Knowledge in Islam, and Islam and Civilizational Dialogue. The first two books have been published in a number of Muslim languages, including Persian, Turkish, Indonesian, and Albanian. Several of his other writings have also been translated into Spanish, Chinese, Urdu, Arabic, and Bosnian. In 2009 Dr Bakar was included in the list of Malaysia’s twenty leading intellectuals. He has been named several times since 2010 among the 500 most influential Muslims in the world (including the latest 2017 edition).

Dr Osman Bakar, Profesor Emeritus di Jabatan Pengajian Sains dan Teknologi, Fakulti Sains, Universiti Malaya kini bertugas sebagai Profesor Unggul dan Pengarah Pusat Pengajian Islam Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien (SOASCIS) di Universiti Brunei Darussalam. Sebelumnya, beliau pernah berkhidmat sebagai Profesor Pengajian Islam di ISTAC, Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIAM) (2005-2008), penyandang Kursi Malaysia dalam bidang Pengajian Islam di Asia Tenggara di Universiti Georgetown (2000-2005), Timbalan Naib Canselor (Pembantu Rektor) Universiti Malaya (1995-2000) dan penyandang pertama Kursi Falsafah Sains di Universiti (1992-2000).

Dr Osman yang berasal dari Temerloh, Pahang mendapat pendidikan menengah di Kolej Melayu, Kuala Kangsar. Beliau melanjutkan pelajaran di Universiti London di mana beliau merupakan anak Melayu pertama menerima ijazah Sarjana Muda Sains (Kepujian) dengan pengkhususan dalam bidang Matematik. Beliau juga menerima ijazah Sarjana Sains (Matematik) dari Universiti yang sama. Setelah bertukar bidang pengkhususan dari bidang matematik kepada bidang agama, falsafah dan sains, beliau melanjutkan pelajarannya untuk ijazah sarjana perbandingan agama dan ijazah kedoktoran dalam bidang falsafah Islam di Universiti Temple, Philadelphia, Amerika Syarikat (1981-1986). Beliau dilantik professor penuh pada tahun 1992.

Dr Osman adalah pengasas utama Akademi Sains Islam Malaysia (ASASI) yang ditubuhkan pada tahun 1977. Beliau telah menjadi Presiden Akademi ini dari 1986 hingga 1992. Beliau pernah menjadi Sarjana Pelawat Fulbright ke Jabatan Sejarah Sains, Universiti Harvard dari Jun-Disember, 1992.  Dr Osman telah menghasilkan 20 buah buku dan hampir 300 buah makalah dalam berbagai-bagai bidang berkaitan dengan peradaban Islam, khususnya sejarah dan falsafah sains Islam. Beberapa buah tulisannya telah diterjemahkan ke dalam pelbagai bahasa umat Islam, termasuklah Bahasa Indonesia, Bahasa Arab, Bahasa Parsi, Bahasa Turki, Bahasa Urdu dan Bahasa Albania. Terdapat juga tulisan-tulisan beliau yang telah diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Cina, bahasa Korea dan bahasa Sepanyol. Dua buah bukunya yang paling terkenal di peringkat antarabangsa ialah Classification of Knowledge in Islam dan Tawhid and Science.

Profesor Osman telah dianugerahkan gelaran Dato’ oleh Sultan Pahang pada tahun 1994 dan gelaran Datuk oleh Yang DiPertuan Agung pada tahun 2000. Beliau pernah dilantik sebagai anggota C-100 (The West-Islamic World Dialogue Initiative) yang ditubuhkan oleh Forum Ekonomi Sedunia beribu pejabat di Davos, Switzerland. Beliau juga tersenarai sebagai salah seorang daripada 500 tokoh Islam paling berpengaruh di dunia sejak tahun 2010 hingga tahun 2017 dan di antara 20 cendekiawan terkemuka Malaysia.
